At Quail Valley Elementary in Palmdale, CA, the 5th grade Special Day Class (SDC) students engaged in a Project-Based Learning Unit centered on the scarcity and importance of water. In this project, students investigated the concept of self-awareness concerning their environmental footprint and the effects of their choices and behaviors on the environment. They collected data on their families’ consumption of natural resources, such as gallons per minute. Bulunda Primary School is located in Mpigi, Uganda, along the shores of Lake Victoria. BEFORE: Students and teachers struggled daily to find a safe space to ‘go’. This caused absence and health issues both from youth and teachers which affected education, poverty, and female health needs. There were no handwashing facilities and because they were so desperate for space, they created a barrier with leaves and poles behind a latrine for children to urinate. Kelsey, a sophomore at Sissonville High School in West Virginia, took part in the H2O for Life Fellowship program last school year, choosing to support Muggaga Secondary School in Uganda. “Initially, we utilized $400 from the H2O for Life Mini-Grant to purchase and sell Chick-fil-A at Sissonville Middle and High Schools. We created posters about Muggaga Secondary School to highlight the effects of the Global Water Crisis, aiming to raise student awareness of its impact on educational communities.
