Hearts for Humanity 2021
The Academy of the Sacred Heart is an all-girls, Toddler-12th grade school in New Orleans, Louisiana. Embedded in the school’s mission is the importance of social justice in our global community. It is one of the five Goals to which our community adheres to in our daily lives.
A 2nd Preparatory social enterprise to fund fresh water projects for communities affected by the global water crisis.
The 2nd Preparatory students participate annually in a social entrepreneurship project known as Hearts for Humanity, which enables students to fulfill Goal 3 of Sacred Heart Schools: Schools of the Sacred Heart commit themselves to educate to a social awareness which impels to action.
Students complete a financial literacy course and produce goods to sell in order to help communities impacted by the global water crisis. This year, the focus is on the indigenous people of the United States who have a great need for freshwater on their tribal lands. Respecting the Native Americans’ dedication to nature and creation, students have built houses and nesting platforms for songbirds whose habitat is Southeast Louisiana. These songbirds left the area after Hurricane Katrina, but they are coming back. Students have engineered these houses, researched the species’ needs, and studied the importance of the Native American culture. While helping local birds, the students’ goal is to provide fresh water tanks to the Navajo Nation in New Mexico. All proceeds from the auction of these houses will go toward that goal. Water is life.
