The Bank Street School Water Warriors!

Posted by Steve Hall on June 14, 2018

The Bank Street School for Children is a private, progressive school in NYC serving children ages 3-14. In the 6th grade, students study water contamination in Science class, human rights in Social Studies, and read “A Long Walk to Water” in English class. As part of an integrated, cross-curricular unit of study, the students wish to raise awareness in their community about the global water crisis and specifically to help a school in South Sudan where the book they are reading takes place.

Here is their journey:

The 6th graders presented a slideshow to educate their families about the water crisis in South Sudan during their spring potluck event. The students also collaborated to create a mural to educate the school community on the global water crisis.  Their work features illustrations of the problem, the many uses of water, and some possible solutions.

Students then gave a slideshow presentation during morning assembly to educate 5th-8th grade about the global water crisis and raise funds for their campaign. They also made posters in preparation for their Walk for Water! A table was set up in the school lobby to provide information on the global water crisis.

Finally, 6th grade students at Bank Street School for Children took to the streets of New York City to inform the community about the global water crisis and to have a firsthand experience of what it might feel like to carry their own drinking water a long distance. The students were enthusiastic and resilient on their walk. Each carried either a sign or a plastic gallon of water (sometimes two). Please enjoy the photos of our fun and tiring morning. As of this posting, the Bank Street School has more than tripled their original fundraising goal – raising over $7,000.00!!!
