The Ascent - Summit on the Summit
“I’ve been on the treadmill a lot, running on an incline just trying to get my legs under me,” Hall said. “It’s really a hike, not a dangerous or technical climb. As long as you can avoid getting altitude sickness, you can make it to the top.”
H2O for Life has been invited to participate in a celebrity climb up Mount Kilimanjaro as part of SUMMIT ON THE SUMMIT. Our Director of School Programs, Steve Hall, will make the 50 mile trek up Kilimanjaro and act as our global classroom educator. Students around the world will be able to follow Steve online and participate in a virtual climb along with the celebrity team. This inspiring, educational event is scheduled to begin January 4, 2013.
What is SUMMIT ON THE SUMMIT?
Founded in 2009 by Grammy-nominated musician and philanthropist Kenna, SUMMIT ON THE SUMMIT is a transmedia initiative designed to drive awareness and change to the global clean water crisis, while engaging a community through raising awareness, supporting education, inspiring advocacy and activating fundraising. By taking cultural influencers, educators and high-profile individuals to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, Summit is able to support organizations in bringing clean water to many of the one billion people living without this basic human right. Kenna’s first Summit in 2010, which counted actors Jessica Biel, Emile Hirsch, Lupe Fiasco and Isabel Lucas among those who climbed Kilimanjaro, encouraged federal support for water and sanitation programs.
Why participate in the climb?
- Summit on the Summit provides an engaging, interactive website designed to capture the attention of youth.
- H2O for Life has developed curriculum that has been co-branded by Summit, and we have also developed specific climb curriculum. We are providing numerous videos, success stories and content surrounding the climb.
- Climbers, including H2O for Life classroom educator, Steve Hall, will blog, send photos, daily action ideas, and tweets to students and classrooms that follow the climb. This provides an opportunity for H2O for Life to increase our presence in schools nationwide and worldwide.
- The climb provides H2O for Life with an opportunity to engage many more US schools and schools around the world in our service learning program.
