At Matoska International, the students are eager to change the world for the better by providing access to clean water and sanitation to those who need it. The Water Warriors is an extracurricular group for students who are leading their school’s H2O for Life project. Founded in 1982, Kankalay Islamic School is an infant, primary, and secondary school in Sierra Leone. This WASH intervention at Kankalay was recently completed and is currently serving a total of 1,800 students with safe water access. The school originally had a hand-dug well on site that was dispensing contaminated water, contributing to illness in the community. To replace that, our implementing partner, Water4, installed their NUMA piped water system. Buyubu Primary School is located in the Iganga District of Uganda. The school has a current enrollment of 711 students (343 girls and 368 boys). Buyubu Primary did not have its own water source, so the students were made to fetch water, multiple times per day, from a community well located at a local trading center 1 km away. The school’s headteacher hired a laborer to fetch water for the school, which worked for a while, but it turned out to be unsustainable as the school soon ran out of money. The new rainwater collection system at Sky Standard Nursery and Primary School in Uganda has been successfully completed! Our implementing partner, Ugandan Water Project, erected a 10,000-liter polyethylene tank on a base made of brick, hardcore, and cement. Once cured, the crew placed the tank on the base, made an overflow hole in the top of the structure and attached a pipe to it that extends six inches beyond the perimeter of the base.
