Walnut Creek Walks for Water
Walnut Creek 6th graders collaborate each quarter on a service learning project. After reading the book, A Long Walk to Water, and conducting water testing labs, students were shocked by the issues of water pollution and scarcity on our planet and even in our own country. As a result, we chose to help a Navajo Nation in the United States. Students brainstormed ways to bring awareness and generate funds to help. Ultimately, this project was a perfect fit because it encouraged students to problem-solve and think globally.
As you know our sixth graders embarked on a service learning project focused on one of our most important natural resources, WATER. This project came to the students organically as they researched and tested water and read the novel, A Long Walk to Water. The kids discovered how unclean water and water scarcity are common problems. These young learners decided to take action to help.
Throughout this project, these students were able to practice many real-world skills that reached beyond the classroom. They brainstormed ideas, collaborated on a common goal, communicated, and practiced leadership. Students were very proud of surpassing their initial goal, by collecting $2,301.99. We held our first-ever, “Walnut Creek Walks for Water” to promote awareness and to celebrate our efforts. Ultimately, these 6th graders learned the importance of becoming positive and empathetic global citizens.
