In January, students from across Minnesota gathered at the Science Museum of Minnesota for the Race2Reduce Summit. These students have been working hard to develop sustainability initiatives at their schools and in their communities to address issues they are learning about in the classroom. They were able to share with one another about the projects they are working on and further develop their ideas with feedback from those working in the field of sustainability. They were also given a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum to see how such a large building has implemented sustainable practices. On top of that, were fun team-building exercises, lunch together, and some time to explore the museum itself!

This was the first of two Race2Reduce summits being held this year. The next one will be held in the spring and the students will have the opportunity to share how their projects unfolded. A few examples of student projects include:

• Meeting with school officials to ensure that sustainability is being considered during the construction of a new school
• A community outreach campaign on household water waste
• Investigating school cafeteria dishes to find more eco-friendly options
• And our personal favorite- recruiting all the schools in their district to participate in an H2O for Life service-learning project (we may be a little biased towards this one)

We are looking forward to the next summit and can’t wait to see what these amazing students accomplish!
