Visit to Wangui Primary School
Recently, H2O for Life sent a team to Kenya to visit 10 of our school projects. The first trip visited was Wangui Primary School near Nyahururu in Laikipia located in Central Kenya. The area is famous for Thompson Falls on the Ewaso Narok River. It is a milk processing hub and used to be known for timber milling. Their most famous person is Samuel Wanjiru, the first Kenya to win the Marathon at the Olympics in 2011.
Wangui School is located off a dusty, dirt road, not far from town. Until H2O for Life partnered with Kenya Rainwater Association, the students walked to a nearby river to collect water for the school for drinking and cooking.
Two young ladies from Standard 8 spoke about the need for water. Leah Maguri and Victoria Ongori presented to the school community and H2O for Life representatives. They said:
“It has been hectic, tiresome and risky going down to the river to fetch water. At times there were not enough containers to carry water. At times the rives is flooded and the risk of drowning criss-crossed our minds. At times there are thorns, stones and bushes around as we get down to the river. Our teachers have always been keen as we ferry the water to our classes. We have had no place to wash our hands after visiting the toilets and before eating lunch.
BUT
We pass a vote of thanks and gratitude to the person (our H2O for Life Schools!) who has considered us to have a tank in our school. We are proud of you, we shall no longer waste time running down to the river, we shall enjoy cleanliness and a lot more having water at a stones throw.”
