The Ripple Effect
In July, 2016 Sara Damon traveled to Kenya with H2O for Life founder Patty Hall and other U.S. teachers. Sara traveled as a Fund for Teachers Fellow to explore and analyze the impact of H2O for Life.

Sara has been an H2O for Life partner for 8 years, and in the process her school, Stillwater Junior High, has donated more than $80,000 for water projects. Sara is an AP Geography teacher and as part of her fellowship, she created a comprehensive curriculum to share with others called The Ripple Effect.

Sara visited Kathungu village for a home stay with H2O for Life guide and friend Christopher Mutuku, and visited a number of schools that received water and sanitation through H2O for Life’s school to school partner program. One of the last stops on the trip was a visit to the Masai Mara at the height of the Great Migration.

With support from U.S. H2O for Life schools, Kenya Rainwater’s school WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) projects include five elements:
- Construction of a masonry rainwater storage tank, guttering system and handwashing station
- Construction of improved, ventilated, gender segregated latrines for students and teachers
- Construction of a farm pond for harvesting and storing rainwater runoff for small-scale irrigation
- Establishment of a school vegetable garden with drip irrigation
- Community, student and staff training on water conservation and sustainability
