Project
Rushaga Community Nursery/Primary School - Latrines
Project Complete!
This is a Community run school located within Rushaga village just a few meters from the edge of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
There are 120 pupils, including 25 from the Batwa (pygmy) tribe who were moved out of the forest when it became a gorilla reserve. Several of the pupils have to board (live) at the school to avoid long and dangerous daily walks through the forest. The teachers also live at the school.
Fees are £12 ($16.76 USD) per term but families struggle to pay even this small amount because there are few opportunities for earning money in this remote region. The school relies on income from guided walks in the village in order to pay the teacher’s salaries.
Our implementing partner (Omushana, Sunshine for Children) has been visiting and helping this school for more than 3 years. The school is a vital community resource and very worthy of support.
Rushaga Community School is in need of new, good quality, latrines. The current old pit latrines are in desperate need of replacement. The proposal is to construct a high quality VIP pit latrine with at least 5 cubicles (2 for boys, 3 for girls with a partition between) plus a urinal for boys. The school has a water catchment tank (funded by H2O for Life in 2015) which makes water available for hand washing after toilet use. A “tippy tap” system will be set up adjacent to the new latrines so the students can wash their hands.
H2O for Life is not a WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) project implementer. We have partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) implementing WASH in Schools projects around the world. Our NGO partners match funds needed for each school project. We also have a generous donor that provides us with an interest-free loan that, along with matching funds, allows for many projects to be started or possibly even completed before total funds have been raised. In rare situations we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
