Msengela Primary School is situated in the Kilolo district of the Iringa region. The school is facing a significant water crisis that adversely impacts the health, hygiene, and academic performance of its 452 students and 8 staff members.
The school lacks a direct water supply, forcing students to fetch water from a stream located more than 1.5 kilometers away. This water is untreated and often contains harmful microorganisms, putting students and staff at risk of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, and cholera. The water shortage prevents regular cleaning of the toilets and creates an unhygienic environment. There are also inadequate handwashing facilities, increasing the risk of disease transmission. This situation poses significant challenges for girls, particularly during menstruation, as they struggle to attend school due to the lack of water and sanitation. Additionally, the time spent fetching water reduces their learning time and contributes to poor academic performance.
The primary goal of this project is to ensure that the students at Msengela Primary School have access to clean water. In collaboration with our implementing partner, St. Paul Partners, we will install a shallow borehole well equipped with a hand pump within the school premises. This initiative guarantees that students will have sufficient safe water, thereby increasing their classroom study time and greatly improving the health of the students and teachers.
