Transforming Futures at Mgongo Primary School, Tanzania:
At Mgongo Primary School in Tanzania, the quest for an education used to come at a steep price. Every single day, 377 students—from tiny nursery pupils to Class Seven leaders—and their 15 dedicated teachers faced a constant struggle: a severe lack of safe, clean water.
Without a reliable water source on school grounds, students were forced to spend crucial hours of their school day fetching water from hand-dug wells and contaminated open pools.
Instead of sitting in class, learning, and dreaming of their futures, children were carrying heavy buckets of muddy water. Even worse, consuming this unsafe water put the entire school community—students, staff, and nearby families—at constant risk of severe waterborne diseases.
To transform the daily lives and learning conditions at Mgongo Primary, our implementing partner, Saint Paul Partners (SPP), proposed a project to bring a permanent solution directly to the school compound. Working alongside local village leaders and school administrators, the team identified the ideal location for a clean water point and drilled a 36-meter-deep shallow well equipped with a durable hand pump.
The results speak for themselves:
- 36 meters deep to tap into safe groundwater.
- 1,540 liters per hour, supplying reliable water for the school and neighboring community.
- Fully tested & safe: Laboratory testing confirmed the water meets Tanzanian standards for domestic use, free of contaminants and rich in healthy minerals.
Access to safe water on school grounds changes everything:
- More Time in Class: Students no longer miss lessons to trek for water. They can focus on their studies, leading to better academic outcomes and brighter futures.
- Improved Community Health: With clean water readily available for drinking and domestic use, the risk of waterborne illness has plummeted.
- Long-Term Sustainability: Infrastructure alone isn't enough; ownership matters. SPP conducted comprehensive WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) training for students and teachers. The school community learned pump operation, maintenance strategies, and sanitation practices to ensure the well serves generations to come.
