Project
Mgongo Primary School
Mgongo Primary School is a government school located within Nduli Ward in Iringa. The school has a total of 377 students from nursery to standard seven, with 195 being boys and 182 girls. There are 15 staff members, including both teachers and non-teaching staff.
Universal access to a safe water supply and adequate sanitation is a significant concern that requires organized efforts from all sectors of society to achieve. In Mgongo, the community struggles to access safe water. Students often walk several kilometers to fetch water from various sources that are unsafe and unclean. In some cases, they are required to bring a bucket of water to school every morning. During break times, students are expected to go to the river and hand-dug wells around the village to fetch water for domestic uses, including cooking, cleaning the school environment, and all activities that require water.
Water from local sources is neither safe nor clean, posing significant risks to health and life in general. Agricultural and domestic activities conducted near these sources contribute to water contamination. As a result, waterborne diseases are common among students and the surrounding communities because they rely on unsafe water from polluted sources. Additionally, spending class hours fetching water negatively impacts their studies and overall performance.
The primary goal of this project is to ensure that the students at Mgongo Primary School have access to clean water. In collaboration with our implementing partner, St. Paul Partners, we will install a shallow borehole well equipped with a hand pump within the school premises. This initiative guarantees that students will have sufficient safe water, thereby increasing their classroom study time. Moreover, the availability of clean water is expected to greatly improve the health of not only the students and teachers but also the surrounding community members.
H2O for Life is not a WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) project implementer. We have partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) implementing WASH in Schools projects around the world. Our NGO partners match funds needed for each school project. We also have a generous donor that provides us with an interest-free loan that, along with matching funds, allows for many projects to be started or possibly even completed before total funds have been raised. In rare situations we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
