For five years the Francis W. Parker Middle School has been committed to the H2O For Life Water Project. We have annually organized two days of projects focused on raising awareness by partaking in a series of activities. Some of the activities we have done in the past are a water carrying obstacle course to replicate the daily journey of kids fetching water, performing in a flashmob with a water theme, paintings that hang in our hallways regarding the theme of water, poetry panels, and a 5K walk/run. We have even built a model of a boat out of recycled water bottles to draw attention to a slightly different water problem: the floating garbage patches made up of plastics in our oceans (look up the voyage of the Plastiki if interested).
One of the reasons we are excited about this doing another project with H2O For Life, aside from the need and the modeling of empathy and service, is that this is achievable. Sometimes kids are overwhelmed by world issues that seem unmanageable. We can actually accomplish this and step back and feel we made a huge difference. That is optimistic and encouraging. Middle School students have the altruism and energy to change the world. We hope we can count on your support.
