Each year, we encourage our students to become involved in a charitable service project to foster activism within the global community. Our first year, we decided to direct our efforts towards a charity that directly benefits children, so we signed on to help raise funds for Ecole Mixte Action Fraternelle in Haiti. Our students rose to the challenge and exceeded their fundraising goal. As our continued hope, is to foster a sense of responsibility and fellowship with others in their age group who do not have access to the same basic necessities of daily life, we have decided to take on an entire project on our own this year. Two years ago, we decided to sponsor a well in South Sudan. We encouraged community outreach, by sending student groups to local business and fellowship groups to explain our cause and solicit financial support. There were additional fundraising and educational opportunities throughout the year. Again, our students surpassed the goal. last year we again sponsored a school in Haiti, while also supporting parish relief efforts in Puerto Rico, and greatly surpassed our goal. This year, we will focus our efforts for maintenance to a well and water supply in the Dominican Republic. This will help keep the water clean and flowing at a school with a large Haitian population. Our 6th, 7th and 8th graders will participate in a walk in June to “put themselves in the shoes” of those for whom water is not easily accessible. We will also be including the primary grades, by having them complete an abbreviated walk.
