Five years ago in Naggalama Village in the Mukono District there was a high number of children with disabilities who were not receiving an education like their peers. Local parents from the village came together and established an inclusive school for both children with and without disabilities. Golden Star Primary School now has 305 pupils, of which 25 have disabilities.
The school currently has 4 old pit latrines, which have a poor waste disposal system and are inaccessible to pupils with disabilities, especially wheelchair users and the blind. Wheelchair users have to crawl down in order to reach the latrine openings and they end up touching the filthy floor. Dirty and inaccessible toilets has led to a 70% dropout rate and also a high rate of water borne disease among pupils at this school.
This project will provide new accessible latrines and handwashing facilities for all the pupils along with the implementation of a hygiene education program in the classroom. Pupils with and without disabilities will be in position to acquire a quality education.
H2O for Life partners with experienced NGO organizations around the world that build and support clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education projects in schools. These NGO partners cover half the total cost of every project funded through H2O for Life.
When students raise money for a project, 90% of the funds go directly to the project, and 10% supports the work that makes the project possible. This includes choosing trusted partners, managing funds responsibly, checking on projects, and reporting back so students can see the impact of their work.
This helps ensure every project is done well, stays sustainable, and truly changes lives.
In rare situations, we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
