Wampewo Primary School (replaces Namulonge Primary)
Project Complete!
Namulonge Primary School is home to over 650 students in Wakiso district, located in Uganda’s Central region. While the school once had convenient access to clean, safe drinking water right on its premises, the borehole well that used to provide this vital resource has since fallen into complete disrepair.
Today, students are forced to travel by foot for a kilometer to fetch water from a spring box that is used by 1,000 people in the area, resulting in long wait times of 30 to 60 minutes that further deprive the children of valuable classroom time. However, time and distance are not the only concerns. Given that the spring box is located at the base of a steep hill and surrounded by dense vegetation, students are not only at risk of serious injury as they carry heavy jerry cans full of water up an uneven path, but are also in danger of encountering various predators, including poisonous snakes and adult assailants.
Project Proposal:
Beginning with the replacement of the well’s entire in-ground and above-ground structure using high-quality steel and rubber, Ugandan Water Project (our implementing partner) will perform a full rehabilitation of Namulonge Primary School’s borehole well to restore it to working order and extend its life expectancy. After its parts have been replaced, the well will then have compressed air forced through it so that any remaining silt is blown out and removed from the system. Additionally, UWP’s team will erect an elevated platform and run-off channel around the well’s pump and build a wooden fence around the whole structure in order to secure the borehole well and prevent contamination of its water. The project will be concluded with UWP’s team conducting a training for school staff and key community members that includes lessons on how to properly use and maintain the well, in addition to lessons on good hygiene and sanitation practices.

H2O for Life is not a WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) project implementer. We have partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) implementing WASH in Schools projects around the world. Our NGO partners match funds needed for each school project. We also have a generous donor that provides us with an interest-free loan that, along with matching funds, allows for many projects to be started or possibly even completed before total funds have been raised. In rare situations we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
