Chiwale Primary School is located in the village of Chiwale in Tete Province, Mozambique, which is in the southeastern part of Africa. Chiwale is on the road to Angonia and is about 30-35 km from the Zobue border. This part of Mozambique is far from any major cities and is very rural, with the primary occupation being subsistence farming.
The school has three classrooms, a population of 453 students from grades 1-7 and 9 teachers. There are currently two failing latrines built out of straw, one for the boys and one for the girls. The teachers live in makeshift houses and use the same latrines as the students. The school desperately needs proper toilet blocks for better sanitation.
There is no well near the school. The students get water from a nearby river that sometimes dries up during the dry season. When that happens, they dig shallow wells in the dry river beds for water that is dirty and contaminated by animals.

The project proposal includes putting in a deep bore hole well, a toilet block and implementing a hygiene education program. Hygiene education is essential for the well-being of the children and will be facilitated by Sebber Banda, a public health nurse. She will use skits to augment her teaching.
H2O for Life is not a WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) project implementer. We have partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) implementing WASH in Schools projects around the world. Our NGO partners match funds needed for each school project. We also have a generous donor that provides us with an interest-free loan that, along with matching funds, allows for many projects to be started or possibly even completed before total funds have been raised. In rare situations we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
