Amuria Primary School
Project Complete!
Amuria Primary School is located in an area approximately 10 kilometers from town in the Amuria district in the northeastern part of Uganda. The school has an enrollment of 200 students and teachers with a total area population of 3,460,000 people. Many of these people are displaced from land conflicts in the region and many families live in temporary housing situations or send their children to live at school or by themselves near the school because they have no permanent home.
Before and during school, students must walk for 1.5 kilometers to collect water for use at school. This water source, a borehole well, is shared by 370 households and 3 other local schools. Often, students are bitten by snakes, knocked down by motorcycles, start lessons late, have jerrycans full of water stolen and are beaten by community members in the struggle for water. Their parents must pay high amounts of money monthly for buying water for food preparation, cleaning, bathing and cooking.
Having access to clean water and good sanitation is important because it prevents children from getting sick from dirty water and enables parents and the school to save income for other activities. Having access to good hygiene education will encourage students to practice proper hygiene to be maintained at the school so students will not be sick from stomach pain, and the school can spend money on school materials instead of medicine and hospital visits. It has been proven time and time again, that the number of student absences will reduce, enrollment will increase, school curriculum will be completed on time, good grades will be possible, and issues of deformity and death due to snake bites and motorcycle accidents will be eliminated.
In partnership with the Orphans and Widows Association for Development, we will construct two rain water harvesting tanks for the school boarders and day students (1 for boys & 1 for girls). The girls will have water to enable them to have a bath, aspecially when they are in their menstrual cycles. Dormitories will be mopped, hands washed after visiting the pit latrine and expenses for water will be reduced. In addition, we will train the school staff and parent teachers association to make soap, increasing the their income.
H2O for Life is not a WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) project implementer. We have partnerships with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) implementing WASH in Schools projects around the world. Our NGO partners match funds needed for each school project. We also have a generous donor that provides us with an interest-free loan that, along with matching funds, allows for many projects to be started or possibly even completed before total funds have been raised. In rare situations we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
