Mugumo Primary School is located in Daiga, Laikipia East District of Kenya. The school is approximately 10km from the nearest town, Nanyuki. Mugumo. Mugumo has a population of 297 students (145 boys & 152 girls) and 8 teachers (3 male and 5 female).
Mugumo had been using a tank constructed in 1990 for rainwater catchment that is currently out of commission due to leakage. During the dry spell, the school gets water from a community water tank which affects the learning and attendance as students have to go fetch the water. The school has good rainwater harvesting potential as the area experiences high rainfall.
Mugumo has sub-standard pit latrines and the pupils do not have adequate water to wash their hands after visiting the latrines. The school uses four 5-litre containers as hand washing facilities. They have also had to abandon some of the latrines as they were collapsing. This is a health hazard especially to the children as anyone of them could fall into the abandoned pits.
This project will include rainwater catchment, new latrines, handwashing stations and hygiene education.
H2O for Life partners with experienced NGO organizations around the world that build and support clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education projects in schools. These NGO partners cover half the total cost of every project funded through H2O for Life.
When students raise money for a project, 90% of the funds go directly to the project, and 10% supports the work that makes the project possible. This includes choosing trusted partners, managing funds responsibly, checking on projects, and reporting back so students can see the impact of their work.
This helps ensure every project is done well, stays sustainable, and truly changes lives.
In rare situations, we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
