Ukumbi Primary School is a government-owned day school situated in Ukumbi Village. The school serves both boys and girls from nearby communities and currently has a total enrollment of 760 pupils, supported by 11 staff members, including both teachers and non-teaching personnel. Despite its commitment to providing quality education, Ukumbi faces a significant challenge regarding access to safe and reliable water.
Ukumbi Primary School doesn’t have a direct or reliable water supply, so pupils and staff rely on unsafe, distant sources, like a small river shared with cattle and other animals. This puts the school community at serious risk of waterborne illnesses such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid. Without clean water on-site, every pupil must bring a bucket of water from home daily for cooking, cleaning, and sanitation. This not only adds a heavy physical burden but also steals valuable learning time, as students spend hours fetching water from far-off community sources, which in turn hurts attendance and academic performance.
The primary goal of this project is to ensure that the students at Ukumbi Primary School have access to clean water. In collaboration with our implementing partner, St. Paul Partners, we will install a shallow borehole well equipped with a hand pump within the school premises. This initiative guarantees that students will have sufficient safe water, thereby increasing their classroom study time. Moreover, the availability of clean water is expected to greatly improve the health of not only students and teachers but also community members in the surrounding area.
