Lufita Secondary School, a government institution in Kilolo District of the Iringa Region, serves students from Form One to Form Three, with a total of 379 enrolled. It plays an important role in offering quality education to youth from surrounding villages. Unfortunately, the lack of access to clean, safe water on the school grounds significantly affects the learning environment.
Lufita Secondary School currently lacks a reliable water source, forcing students to walk about two kilometers to collect water from unsafe, unprotected sources such as small streams shared with the community and livestock. During the dry season, many of these sources run dry, putting students at risk of waterborne diseases like diarrhea and typhoid. The long trips to fetch water also take up valuable time, reducing study hours and lowering class attendance. Female students are especially affected, as they often bear the responsibility of fetching water for both school and home. Inadequate sanitation during menstruation further impacts girls’ education, contributing to a 25% absence rate.
The primary goal of this project is to ensure that the students at Lufita Secondary School have access to clean water. In collaboration with our implementing partner, St. Paul Partners, we will install a shallow borehole well equipped with a hand pump within the school premises. This initiative guarantees that students will have sufficient safe water, thereby increasing their classroom study time. Moreover, the availability of clean water is expected to greatly improve the health of not only students and teachers but also community members in the surrounding area.
H2O for Life partners with experienced NGO organizations around the world that build and support clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education projects in schools. These NGO partners cover half the total cost of every project funded through H2O for Life.
When students raise money for a project, 90% of the funds go directly to the project, and 10% supports the work that makes the project possible. This includes choosing trusted partners, managing funds responsibly, checking on projects, and reporting back so students can see the impact of their work.
This helps ensure every project is done well, stays sustainable, and truly changes lives.
In rare situations, we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
