Ugwachanya Primary School is a government institution located in Mseke Ward, Iringa Region. The school has a total of 665 students and 18 staff members, which includes both teachers and non-teaching personnel. It plays a vital role in shaping the future of the community through education. However, it faces significant challenges due to a lack of a clean and reliable water source.
Ugwachanya Primary School faces a significant water supply issue. Students are required to bring 10 liters of water each day. Additionally, during school hours, especially during breaks, students are sent to fetch water from distant sources, resulting in lost class time. This water source is often contaminated due to agricultural and domestic activities, which poses serious health risks. Moreover, the water supply is unreliable and seasonal, with reduced flow during dry periods.
As a result, students and staff are at risk of waterborne diseases such as typhoid, cholera, and diarrhea. The water crisis has a considerable impact on academic performance. Students frequently spend valuable class time collecting water and often return tired and late for lessons, leading to missed classes. Teachers also report a high level of absenteeism related to health issues, particularly among students affected by waterborne diseases.
The primary goal of this project is to ensure that the students at Ugwachanya Primary School have access to clean water. In collaboration with our implementing partner, St. Paul Partners, we will install a shallow borehole well equipped with a hand pump within the school premises. This initiative guarantees that students will have sufficient safe water, thereby increasing their classroom study time. Moreover, the availability of clean water is expected to greatly improve the health of not only the students and teachers but also the surrounding community members.
H2O for Life partners with experienced NGO organizations around the world that build and support clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education projects in schools. These NGO partners cover half the total cost of every project funded through H2O for Life.
When students raise money for a project, 90% of the funds go directly to the project, and 10% supports the work that makes the project possible. This includes choosing trusted partners, managing funds responsibly, checking on projects, and reporting back so students can see the impact of their work.
This helps ensure every project is done well, stays sustainable, and truly changes lives.
