Clean Water Arrives in Iringa

Transforming Lives at Saadani Primary School, Tanzania:
For years, every morning at Saadani Primary School in the Mseke ward of the Iringa Rural District told the same exhausting story. Before opening a book or writing a single lesson, the school’s 427 pupils faced a heavy burden: carrying buckets from home or journeying to collect water from unsafe, distant sources. This daily struggle stole time from class, drained young minds and energy, compromised basic sanitation and health, and hit young girls especially hard.

Today, that story changes completely.

To transform the daily lives and learning conditions at Saadani Primary, our implementing partner, Saint Paul Partners (SPP), proposed a project to bring a permanent solution directly to the school compound.

The project moved swiftly from initial planning to daily operation through direct, step-by-step collaboration:
  1. Site Assessment & Planning: The team evaluated the terrain on school grounds to pinpoint optimal drilling locations.
  2. Drilling: A 32-meter shallow well was successfully drilled right on the primary school compound.
  3. Safety & Quality Testing: Rigorous pump testing and comprehensive laboratory water quality analyses were conducted to confirm full safety standards for drinking.
  4. Pump Installation: A durable, reliable hand-operated pump was installed, providing a constant supply of safe water.
  5. Community Capacity Building: Comprehensive WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) training sessions were provided for both educators and students.

The physical presence of the new hand pump transforms every hour of the school day:
  • Health and Safety: Pupils no longer drink contaminated water or trek along hazardous routes carrying heavy loads.
  • Academic Focus: Hours previously spent hauling buckets are restored to the classroom, allowing students to learn and teachers to instruct without interruption.
  • Gender Equity: Girls—who disproportionately bore the chore of fetching water—can now attend class consistently and fully.
  • Community Access: Nearby village members can also access clean, safe drinking water, raising overall health standards across the neighborhood.

Built to Last: Long-Term Sustainability: Clean water infrastructure is only as good as its maintenance. To keep the water flowing for generations to come, SPP implemented a comprehensive sustainability package:
  • Water Management Committee: Formed by school staff and student representatives to oversee daily operations and governance.
  • Technical Maintenance Training: Direct instruction covering routine pump operation and preventative maintenance.
  • Budgetary Planning: Clear administrative frameworks for repairs and future upkeep.

Special thanks go out to Bank Street School for Children, NY!

* Because the Tanzanian government recently completed a well at our initial target site, Tanangozi Secondary, project funding was redirected to meet the critical water needs at Saadani Primary School instead.
