Pommerin Primary School is situated in the village of Pommerin, within the Kilolo District of the Iringa region. As a public school, it is dedicated to inclusive education. The school serves a total of 667 students, including 111 with special needs. To meet the diverse requirements of its students, Pommerin Primary employs 22 teachers, who are trained in both general education and special needs education. The school exemplifies Tanzania's national strategy for inclusive education, which aims to transform the education system to accommodate all learners in mainstream settings by addressing and responding to their varied needs.
Pommerin Primary School includes a dedicated Special Education Unit that focuses on supporting students with disabilities, such as hearing impairments, physical disabilities, and visual impairments. This unit highlights the school's commitment to providing the necessary educational support for these students. Through its inclusive approach, the school plays a vital role in promoting equitable access to education for children with disabilities in the region. Additionally, the school should ensure an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, which includes access to safe, clean water.
Pommerin Primary School faces significant water-related challenges that negatively affect the well-being and education of its students, including those with special needs. The school often struggles to provide a reliable supply of safe drinking water. This scarcity impacts daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, and personal hygiene, all of which are essential for maintaining a healthy learning environment. Furthermore, the inadequate water supply compromises sanitation and hygiene practices, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases among students and staff. This situation is particularly concerning for students with special needs, who may be more vulnerable to health issues.
Water shortages can result in the suspension of classes or reduced school hours, disrupting the educational process. Additionally, the responsibility of fetching water often falls on students, leading to absenteeism and negatively impacting their academic performance. Currently, the school obtains water from local village sources, including shared boreholes and public water points located within Pommerin village. These sources are often far from the school, requiring students or staff to walk long distances to fetch water. At times, when students attempt to use these public water points, they encounter long queues, which force them to spend a significant amount of time collecting water.
The primary goal of this project is to ensure that the students at Pommerin Primary School have access to clean water. In collaboration with our implementing partner, St. Paul Partners, we will install a shallow borehole well equipped with a hand pump within the school premises. This initiative aims to improve water access around the school, providing students with a reliable source of clean water. It will also ensure that all children, regardless of their needs, have the opportunity to learn in a safe and supportive environment.
Water is essential for life, and the World Health Organization highlights its importance for health, hygiene, and development. According to the WHO, access to safe and sufficient water is a basic human right. Therefore, by addressing the water challenges and helping Pommerin Primary School secure a reliable water source, we can significantly enhance the health, attendance, and overall educational outcomes for the students.
H2O for Life partners with experienced NGO organizations around the world that build and support clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education projects in schools. These NGO partners cover half the total cost of every project funded through H2O for Life.
When students raise money for a project, 90% of the funds go directly to the project, and 10% supports the work that makes the project possible. This includes choosing trusted partners, managing funds responsibly, checking on projects, and reporting back so students can see the impact of their work.
This helps ensure every project is done well, stays sustainable, and truly changes lives.
In rare situations, we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
