Kilolo Secondary School is a government school located in the Kilolo District, Iringa, Tanzania. The school has 1011 students (610 girls/401 boys) from forms 1-4. The school has a total of 27 staff members, including teachers and non-teachers.
As with many villages and schools in Iringa, the lack of safe water for Kikolo School is a major problem. The students currently waste a lot of time, typically walking 2 km each way, fetching water for domestic uses including drinking, cleaning, and cooking. Students are also tasked with bringing water to school each morning. They fetch this water from various sources on the way, including a river and small streams. All this wasted time negatively impacts their school performance. Teachers often escort the children, missing time in the classroom as well. These local water sources are shared with animals and are not safe/clean leading to rampant waterborne illness.
The overall objective of this project is to provide access to clean water for the students at Kilolo Secondary School. Our implementing partner, St. Paul Partners, will install a shallow borehole well with a hand pump located directly on the school compound. This will ensure students have access to enough safe water, which will lead to more time in the classroom to study. Access to safe water will also significantly impact the health of the students, teachers and neighbors around the village.
H2O for Life partners with experienced NGO organizations around the world that build and support clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education projects in schools. These NGO partners cover half the total cost of every project funded through H2O for Life.
When students raise money for a project, 90% of the funds go directly to the project, and 10% supports the work that makes the project possible. This includes choosing trusted partners, managing funds responsibly, checking on projects, and reporting back so students can see the impact of their work.
This helps ensure every project is done well, stays sustainable, and truly changes lives.
In rare situations, we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
