Bulunda project complete
October 22, 2024
Bulunda Primary School is located in Mpigi, Uganda, along the shores of Lake Victoria.
BEFORE:
Students and teachers struggled daily to find a safe space to 'go'. This caused absence and health issues both from youth and teachers which affected education, poverty, and female health needs. There were no handwashing facilities and because they were so desperate for space, they created a barrier with leaves and poles behind a latrine for children to urinate. This was not clean or safe, especially as many children lack shoes and disease can and does spread easily.

AFTER:
Our implementing partner, Drink Local Drink Tap, constructed two new, safe, secure, VIP (ventilated improved pit) latrine blocks for boys and girls while also keeping in mind disabled users. A third block will be constructed for teachers, adults and visitors. All facilities will have permanent handwashing facilities and water, hygiene, and sanitation training will be led in all classrooms. Note, a 'block' contains 5 rooms/toilets, the girls will have a 'washroom' and the boys will have a urinal. Bulunda Primary already has a borehole well that provides sufficient safe water.
Here is a letter from our implementing partner, Drink Local Drink Tap (DLDT).

Thank you for trusting DLDT with your generous donation to help the people of the Bulunda Primary School in Mpigi, Uganda, have access to safe, clean, dignified toilets and handwashing facilities.
The toilet blocks that you supported opened in June 2024, replacing old, unsafe infrastructure that posed a danger to both students and teachers. The new facilities will serve 14 teachers, 530 children (250 boys and 280 girls), and all future students. Thanks to your generosity, children now have access to safe toilets and sanitation and no longer need to defecate outside in unsafe, open spaces or avoid school due to a lack of toilets. You have made Bulunda Primary School a safer environment for learning and truly made a difference in the lives of many families.
Thank you for your generosity and trust—and for having the courage to help. We look forward to continuing to partner with the Bulunda Primary School community to improve basic health through water access and equity—something we can do because of generous supporters like you. Together we are making a meaningful impact!
