Akome project complete
September 29, 2022
Akome is a rural community located in Ho-West district in the Volta region of Ghana. The population of Akome Gbota according to the 2020 Ghana Statistical Authority is 15,927. The major economic activity in the community is subsistent farming and hunting. The people are friendly and accommodating.
Akome Senior High Technical School was established in 1991 by the government of Ghana in partnership with the community. The school has not received any major development from the government since its establishment, so the community members always come together to support the school through communal labor. The school was built to help impart knowledge and offer skills and training to youth who may not be able to further their education. These skills will enable the students to earn a living in the future. Being the only senior school in the area, the school population currently stands at 670.

The school’s borehole well had been broken for years, so the students were forced to fetch water from various sources which are typically miles away. During the dry season, the situation was worse as the pupils have to wait in line for long periods to get their turn at the various sources. Time wasted fetching water multiple times per day has a negative impact on teaching and learning.
The community provided labor and much of the building materials (lumber/cracked stones), which are found locally, to support the rehab of the school's borehole. In addition, a pump was installed and PVC piping was used to deliver water to a new poly tank ensuring there is plenty of safe water for all students at all times. Our implementing partner, Volunteers for Amelioration of Rural Areas, will be in charge of ensuring the success and sustainability of this life-changing project.
