Irimba Project Complete
September 23, 2024
In Nakasongola, Uganda, Drink Local Drink Tap, our implementing partner, has had a longstanding partnership with the Irimba community. Irimba Primary School serves children from several villages. The school is particularly popular with girls due to the DLDT toilets (ventilated improved pit latrines - VIP) and the water well (borehole). The final addition needed for the school was a latrine block (VIP) for the boys, as the girls had received theirs in previous years.
The boys were utilizing a highly unstable latrine that was on the verge of collapse. The sensation of walking on the latrine's platform or floor was akin to the fear of falling into the pit below. This situation led many boys to avoid school or refrain from using the latrine, which can lead to long-term health issues such as ulcers.
The construction of this latrine block will enable boys to remain safe and healthy, increase their motivation to attend school, and take pride in their surroundings. The days of lacking privacy and navigating through others' messes in the open will become a thing of the past.
Here's a letter from our implementing partner, DLDT.
Dear H2O for Life,
Thank you for trusting Drink Local Drink Tap with your generous donation to help the boys at Irimba Primary School in Nakasongola, Uganda, have access to safe toilets.
The toilet block that you funded opened in December, 2022 and serves the 234+ boys at Irimba Primary School and all who come after them. Your generosity means children will no longer have to worry about collapsing toilets or ‘going’ in open areas. You have truly made a difference in the lives of so many families.
Thank you for your generosity and trust—and for having the courage to help. We look forward to continuing to partner with Irimba Primary School to improve basic health through safe access to sanitation and hygiene!
Thank you! Together we are making a meaningful impact.
Thank you to Centennial Middle School in MN for supporting this project!
