Akome Gbota is a rural community located in Ho-West district in the Volta region of Ghana. The population of Akome Gbota according to the 2020 Ghana Statistical Authority is 10,927. The major economic activity in the community is subsistent farming and hunting. The people are friendly and accommodating. Akome Gbota Community School was established in 1923 by the Government of Ghana in partnership with the community. The school has not received major development from the government since its establishment, so the community members always come together to support the school through communal labor. Being the only school in the area, the school population currently stands at 351 from kindergarten to grade 6.
The school lacks a decent washroom facility. The one they currently have now is a death trap and exposes the pupils to all kinds of danger. Recently, a grade one pupil fell in the toilet pit when she saw a snake hiding around the structure. This has not been the first time such an incidence has occurred. The chairman of the School Management Committee confirmed a grade 6 pupil was bitten by a snake and due to this some of the pupils choose to walk home whenever they need to use the washroom. This has a very negative impact on teaching and learning. Unfortunately, the lack of a proper toilet facility has prevented many children from coming to school at all. The chief of the community is worried this will negatively impact the development of the community in the near future.
The community will provide labor and much of the building materials, which can be found locally, to support the construction of new washrooms for the students of Akome Gbota. Our implementing partner, Volunteers for Amelioration of Rural Areas, will be in charge of ensuring the success of this life-changing project.
H2O for Life partners with experienced NGO organizations around the world that build and support clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education projects in schools. These NGO partners cover half the total cost of every project funded through H2O for Life.
When students raise money for a project, 90% of the funds go directly to the project, and 10% supports the work that makes the project possible. This includes choosing trusted partners, managing funds responsibly, checking on projects, and reporting back so students can see the impact of their work.
This helps ensure every project is done well, stays sustainable, and truly changes lives.
In rare situations, we reserve the right to reallocate funds to alternate project(s).
